"JUST THE FACTS, MA'AM"

Today  the  Sandy  Hook  children  return  to  their

new  school.   I  wish  for  them  and  their  parents

the  peace  of  God  that  surpasses  all  understanding

and  lots  of  HUGS.   I  would  be  one  of  the  parents

that  stayed  for  the  day.

The  thing  I   love  is  that  they  have  ask  the  media

to  stay  away  and  let  them  adjust  this  first  day

back.

I   just  squeeze  each  one  of  you  real  tight.

The  TV  show  "DRAGNET"  debutes

"JUST  THE  FACTS,  MA'AM." 

Now  mind  you  I  was  born  a  few  years

later  but  when  I  was  about  7  or  8  it

was  still  playing  and  I  LOVED  that  show.

I  did  not  know  it  started  as  a  famous  radio

show.

It  was  one  of  the  first  TV  Series  filmed

in  Hollywood  instead  of  New  York.

DRAGNET  broke  one  of  the  unspoken  taboos

of  popular  entertainment  in  the  episode  ".22

Rifle  for  Christmas"  which  aired  December  22,

1949  and  was  repeated  at  Christmas  time  for

the  next  three  years.

The  episode  followed  the  search  for  two  young

boys,  Stanley  Johnstone  and  Stevie  Morheim, 

only  to  discover  Stevie  had  been  accidentally

killed  while  playing  with  a  rifle  that  belonged

to  Stanley--who'd  be  receiving  it  as  a  Christmas

present  but  opened  the  box  early;  Stanley

finally  told  Friday  that  Stevie  was  running  while

holding  the  rifle  when  he  tripped  and  fell, 

causing  the  gun  to  discharge,  fatally  wounding

him.

NBC  received  thousands  of  complaint  letters,

including  a  formal  protest  by  the  National

Rifle  Association.

Webb  forwarded  many  of  the  letters  to  police

chief  Parker  who  promised  "ten  more  shows

illustrating  the  folly  of  giving  rifles  to  children."

".22  Rifle  for  Christmas"  was  replaced  as  the

series'  Christmas  story  on  December  22,  1953

with  "The  Big  Little  Jesus",  which  followed  the

detectives'  investigation  of  the  theft  of  a  statue

of  the  baby  Jesus  from  a  church's  Nativity

scene.  It  ended  on  a  much  happier  note  and

was  repeated  the  next  year  at  CHRISTMAS  time.

I  thought  it  ironic  on  the  day  Sandy  Hook  children

went  back  to  school,  that  from  1942  until  2013

the  debate  of  guns  continues...although  the  situations

were  different,  and  the  one  was  a  horrible

accident.
