IN FLANDERS FIELDS

XOXOXO...AMY...XOXOXO
ALWAYS  IN  OUR  HEARTS

MEMORIAL  DAY  2010

REMEMBERING  THE  SOLDIERS  WHO

BOUGHT  OUR  FREEDOM...

THANK  YOU  SOLDIER  BOY/GIRL

WHEN  I  WAS  IN  9TH - 11TH  GRADE  I  WAS  A

MEMBER  OF  THE  LEGIONETTES  COLOR  GUARD

MARCHING  BAND.

WE  WORE  THICK  GOLD  SILK  TOPS WITH  NAVY

BLUE  PLEATED  SKIRTS  AND  WHITE  MARCHING

BOOTS  WITH  BIG  WHITE  POM  POMS.

I  CARRIED  THE  RIFLE  AND  WAS  ON  THE  LEFT

SIDE  OF  THE  FLAG.  OUR  HATS  WERE  JUST  LIKE

WHAT

THE  PRECIOUS  VFW  MEN  WORE  WHEN  SELLING

THEIR  CREPE  PAPER  POPPIES.

WHEN  WE  ARRIVED  IN  FRONT  OF  THE  JUDGES

WE  TWIRLED  OUR  WHITE  RIFLES  WITH  PRIDE,

PRAYING  WE  DID  NOT  DROP  OUR  RIFLES.

I  ACTUALLY  HAVE  THE  PICTURE  THAT  WAS

ON  THE  FRONT  PAGE  OF  THE  NEWS  PAPER

BUT  HAVE  MISPLACED  IT.

THAT  WAS  ONLY  STARTING  IN  1969...EVER  SO

LONG  AGO.

THE  RED  CREPE  PAPER  POPPIES  BRING  BACK

A  HAPPY,  WARM  MEMORY.

THE  ORIGINAL  INSPIRATION  FOR  THE

VETERANS  TO  SELL  PAPER  POPPIES

FOR  MEMORIAL  DAY  CAME  FROM  THE

FAMOUS  POEM:

IN  FLANDERS  FIELDS

WRITTEN  BY

~JOHN  McCRAE  IN  1915

IN  FLANDERS  FIELDS  THE  POPPIES  BLOW

BETWEEN  THE  CROSSES,  ROW  ON  ROW

THAT  MARK  OUR  PLACE;  AND  IN  THE  SKY

THE  LARKS,  STILL  BRAVELY  SINGING,  FLY

SCARCE  HEARD  AMID  THE  GUNS  BELOW

WE  ARE  THE  DEAD.

SHORT  DAYS  AGO

WE  LIVED,  FELT  DAWN,  SAW  SUNSET  GLOW,

LOVED  AND  WERE  LOVED,  AND  NOW  WE  LIE  IN

FLANDERS  FIELDS.

TAKE  UP  OUR  QUARREL  WITH  THE  FOE;

TO  YOU  FROM  FAILING  HANDS  WE  THROW

THE  TORCH;  BE  YOURS  TO  HOLD  IT  HIGH

IF  YE  BREAK  FAITH  WITH  US  WHO  DIE

WE  SHALL  NOT  SLEEP,  THOUGH  POPPIES  GROW

IN  FLANDERS  FIELDS.

IN  1922  THE  VETERANS  OF  FOREIGN  WARS

BECAME  THE  FIRST  VETERAN  ORGANIZATION

TO  SELL  POPPIES  NATIONALLY  FOR

MEMORIAL  DAY.

I  ALWAYS  WONDERED  WHY  WE  WOULD

TELL  PEOPLE

HAPPY  MEMORIAL  DAY

WHEN  IN  FACT  IT  IS  A  VERY

SOMBER  DAY,  WHEN  A  MOTHER,

A  WIFE,  A  GRANDMOTHER,  OR  AUNT,  OR

SISTER  HAD/HAS  TO  SAY  GOOD-BYE

TO  THEIR  SOLDIER  BOY/GIRL  OVER  AND  OVER

BUT  SO  PROUD.

MY  HEART  GOES  OUT  TO  THOSE  FAMILIES

WHO  HAD  A  LOVED  ONE  DIE  IN  THE  WAR.

TO  THE  SOLDIER....

THANK  YOU  FOR  FIGHTING  TO  KEEP

AMERICA  FREE.

SOME  DAY  WHEN  I  GET  TO  HEAVEN,  I  CAN

THANK  YOU  PERSONALLY,  AS  WE  BOW  BEFORE

JESUS  WHO  BOUGHT  OUR  ETERNAL  FREEDOM...

LEST  WE  NOT  FORGET

I was thinking about this poem today. My parents had me memorize it in seventh grade and I still remember it. My prayer request is for safety for my friend Jonathan and those he is serving our country with in Afghanistan. My prayers for safety for all who serve.

What a beautiful post.

How wonderful a memory to have been in that Color Guard! Doing your part to honor the veterans...everyone should honor their sacrifices.

We had to memorize this poem in school and as our Remberance Day is Nov. 11th each year the vets, service people and legion members sell poppies. It is an emotional time but one that reminds us that freedom is not free......:-) Hugs

There was a lovely older lady selling poppies outside Wally World when I stopped by last Friday. She was just the sweetest thing. Of course I had to bring a poppy home. It's something my husband and I always do - a small reminder of the sacrifices our veterans and current military folks make for our country.

Very nice post Debbie. I so agree with you Memorial Day is really not a happy Day when you really think of the true meaning behind it.....it is a somber day of rememberance for all that these men and women who have lost their lives for our freedom, and like you say about their dear families, what a horrible loss for them.
God Bless them one and all.

Blessings to you Sweetie,
Nellie

Thank you for this poignant post. You are so right. So many of us just think of it as the start to summer and it's so much more than that. Thank you again.

Dearest Debbie,
My heart just raced when I saw your words on my blog. I'm not sure how you found me but I do know Heidi and Sherry and likely many that you know and the precious story of Amy.

I'm happy you are coming on the Cupcake Walk with me. I have the need daily to be happy. I try hard to choose Joy. I love Jesus, my husband and friends and three kids and one daughter in law and gnomes and elves and my three dogs...and so much more. If you ever have a free moment come to my blog and click on My home-Once Upon a Fairyland and you'll see my childhood home and understand why I'm as childlike as I am...I never want to grow up.

Happy as a bee on a flower to meet you. I will return.
Love in Christ, Jacqueline

Deb, first thank you for your kind words. Also we are very supportive when it comes to our troops. I never once thought I would live through 4 wars, though and hopefully we can end them all and have peace the way God intended it to be. God Bless you and your sweet angel in Heaven. Pat
